Heart cycle

Marie Campbell, a triathlete and cardiac nurse at BC Children's Hospital, has combined her two loves, cycling and caring for children, and organized a charity cycling event, the second annual Triple Crown for Heart, July 30.

Welfare challenge

None of B.C.'s 85 MLAs has agreed to take the MLA Welfare Challenge. Raise the Rates, a coalition of more than 20 organizations from around the province that are concerned with the level of poverty and homelessness in B.C.

Light up your life

The Illuminares Lantern Festival 2011 is looming and lantern-making workshops are running now until July 30, the day of the spectacle that happens this year at Harbour Green Park in Coal Harbour and Canada Place.

Book sale

A big book sale will be held Friday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Granville Seniors Centre (1420 West 12th Avenue at Hemlock). The event promises a large selection of books, all at $2 or less.

Food spotting

The City of Vancouver's food cart program now has 97 carts in operation and a free iTunes app to track vendors. It's been one year since the city expanded its street food program.

Livable Laneways

Paths to Plazas laneway night markets continue in Mount Pleasant July 23 and 30. Sixty Blim market vendors will sell their wares in the lane just beyond the historic Lee Building at Main and Broadway, July 23.

Hopefully the only rain the city will enjoy during Pride Week is of the male kind. Despite the cool, damp weather weve been suffering, Pride has a tradition of heating things up, so fingers crossed.

Yarn swap

Knitting enthusiasts can join the local fibre community through Vancouver's first knitting events company, the recently launched Knit Social Event Co., at an upcoming Yarn Swap from 10: 30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Aug. 13.
