Powerful winds swirled through Burnaby on Wednesday night as a storm that brought heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures turned into gale-force winds.

Those winds knocked out the power to thousands of North Burnaby and led to firefighters battling a weird fire involving high-voltage wires.

At 7:15 p.m., Burnaby firefighters were called to Holdom Avenue and Curtis Street for a report of wires down.

When firefighters arrived, they found high-voltage wires on the ground arcing and burning – the video shows the fire sparking into the air. They closed the road and requested BC Hydro to attend as soon as possible. When BC Hydro arrived, workers turned off the power so firefighters could put out the fire.

Power was knocked out for 2,600 properties, according to BC Hydro.
