Operators of Vancouver's JJ Bean coffee shop have made another "painful decision" to close up one of its downtown locations.
The JJ Bean cafe at 425 Dunsmuir St closed its doors permanently on Feb. 26, 2025, .
"We love this neighbourhood and our people at Dunsmuir but like every business, we are sometimes forced to make difficult decisions," stated owner John Neate on behalf of the JJ Bean team in a goodbye note addressed to their "valued customers."
The location opened in 2016 following an extensive renovation of the former Labour Temple that preserved many of the building's historic elements, and saw the addition of a striking herringbone marble tiled wall.
While JJ Bean has exited the Dunsmuir space, there is already a new café business up and running called . The business opened in early March and serves coffee, sandwiches, and pastries.
For its part, JJ Bean has several other coffee shop locations in and around Vancouver, including , where they operate at 1188 Alberni St; 1209 Bidwell St; 353 Burrard St (Marine Building); 609 Hornby St (Park Place); and at 402 Davie St (Yaletown).
The chain's Gastown location closed in July 2023 after a 13-year run at the Woodward's redevelopment, and, just last November, the coffee business exited its CBC "Shack" outpost, which lasted 15 years–well beyond its initial intent as an Olympics-era pop-up.
