A B.C. woman is suing a well-known Mexican restaurant after claiming she bit into a metal nut in a meal she ordered.

In a B.C. Supreme Court April 9 notice of civil claim against Chipotle Mexican Grill Canada Corp., Akem Kaur Gill alleged she ordered a chicken rice bowl at a restaurant in Surrey.

She alleged there was a metal bolt in the bowl.

“She did not see the bolt and bit down upon it when attempting to consume the bowl,” the claim said.

Gill’s claim alleges the company had a duty of care to supply food free of contamination and foreign objects and had failed to safeguard against contamination, to provide adequate quality control and failed to warn of risks or harm that may be suffered when eating the restaurant's food, among other claims.

Gill claims the incident caused severe trauma to her teeth and jaw, indigestion, anxiety, stress, mental distress and post-traumatic stress disorder.

She is seeking damages and costs in the case.

Tyler Benson, Chipotle’s California-based senior manager of external communications, told Glacier Media the company does not comment on pending litigation.
