As 2020 got underway, the 10th anniversary of Richmond's L'Opera Patisserie was shaping up to be a banner year.
The family-run bakery and tea spot was preparing to launch a revamped menu that would feature fondue dishes, perfect for sharing, in the springtime.
However, as well all know now, 2020 had a few surprises in store for us all.
Now L'Opera Patisserie has just revealed they will be closing down for good in August.
"Recently we were gifted a rare and wonderful opportunity to pause, reflect on our business, and how we want to move forward in the future. It is bittersweet for me to share that we will be closing the doors of our bakery on August 16," writes co-owner Janice Marta.
However, Marta adds that L'Opera will carry on, just not in the same physical retail space.
"I can’t wait to share with you the next chapter of L’Opera and all the exciting things we have planned. Don’t worry – this won’t be the last time you taste our flaky croissants," says Marta.
“The patisserie has grown since 2010 and looking back, it was nothing short of a miracle that we are still here,” said Marta back in mid-February.
Marta launched the business back in 2010 when she was a UBC student and a hobby baker, keen on recreating herself those beautiful, buttery, flaky croissants she had enjoyed on a trip to Paris. She got the business of the ground with the help of relatives, who have had a hand in L'Opera this past decade.
In addition to croissants - which also come in some exciting contemporary flavours like "dirty matcha," masago, and salted duck egg yolk - L'Opera is beloved for their popular macarons, as well as their afternoon tea service.
Marta says until closing day, they will continue to offer pastries and desserts via pre-order on weekends, as well as a special high tea set to-go available their final two weekends.
"I hope to see you one more time at L’Opera Patisserie. We are so incredibly thankful for your support over the last decade. It wouldn't be the same without you.
