A new restaurant is opening in Vancouver's Chinatown, but it's bringing back something from the community's past.
is opening at 142 East Pender St., offering up a selection of handmade Malaysian and Singapore-style curries.
"Homemade noodles, flaky roti, and so much more," reads a post on Instagram. "Spices all imported from Singapore."
The name may not be familiar to people in the area, but Golden Smell Mee is actually related to a long-time 鶹ýӳbusiness: Bee Kim Heng.
"Back in 1986, Bee Kim Heng (which translates to Beautiful Golden Smell) was founded in Chinatown by a grandfather and his seven kids," a representative for the restaurant tells V.I.A. "The original spot was in Golden Gate Centre and quickly became a jerky-slinging, noodle-boiling staple of the community."
That business split into two branches: the jerky-slingers (under the name BKH Jerky) and the noodle-boilers (under the name Kim Heng Noodle). Kim Heng was open for years at 617 Gore St. It's now Gore Studio, but the Kim Heng Noodles sign still hangs above.
The family is getting the brand back together with Golden Smell Mee; the sign at the new restaurant notes its establishment as "1986" and includes the BKH Jerky logo.
"Now we’re bringing back BKH to Chinatown as well as a new, improved Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant in the back called Golden Smell Mee," writes the representative.
Golden Smell Mee is in soft opening mode and is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering a full menu at a discount.
Previously, 142 East Pender St. was the home of Daisy Garden Kitchen. It reopened in 2022 after seven years closed due to a fire. In 2023 it closed permanently.
