A woman who went missing after boarding a flight in 2009 at YVR has been reported safe.

The Richmond RCMP sent out an appeal for information about the woman in 2012, saying the family wanted to be assured she was okay.

On Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 23), RCMP sent out a release saying she was found safe, but didn't give any more details.

The woman was supposed to board a flight for Toronto in 2009 but she never arrived at her destination.

The woman was 49 years old at the time and had been living in Vancouver.

Richmond RCMP expressed their thanks to the media and public for their assistance in locating the woman.

Some missing persons cases can be complex and remain open and active for many years, like this one, explained Richmond RCMP media spokesperson Adriana O’Malley.

“Speaking generally, once a person is reported missing in BC, they will remain as missing until they have been located by police,” she added. “This is provincial wide policy and specific parameters must be met before police can conclude an investigation.”

In such active investigations, police, include the Richmond RCMP Missing Persons Unit, conduct regular follow-ups to identify new evidence or leads to help find the missing person.

“Fortunately, in this case investigators were able to find evidence which led to her being located safe and sound,” O’Malley said.
