Thousands of locals and visitors will take to South Vancouver's streets for the annual Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Vaisakhi Parade on Saturday, April 12.
The cherished celebration has been held annually since 1979 (with a pandemic pause) and is one of the biggest Vaisakhi events, featuring a traditional parade (see slide two for route), vendors, and free food for all.
Vaisakhi is an important religious occasion for the Sikh community, celebrating the creation of the Khalsa, which is "a spiritual order founded by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699, a defining moment in Sikh history," according to a City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»news release.
Vaisakhi also marks the beginning of the spring harvest in Punjab.
“We wish the Sikh community, along with all those joining in the celebrations, a joyful and safe Vaisakhi and Nagar Kirtan,” said Mayor Ken Sim.
"Vancouver’s diversity is the foundation of our strength, vibrancy, and prosperity. This parade encourages all Vancouverites to unite in honouring the rich heritage of the Sikh community and celebrating this inclusive and meaningful event that brings us together."
Giving out free food aligns "with the concept of Langar Seva (blessed food/communal meal and selfless service)," and "all are welcome" to enjoy the food, which is prepared by and paid for by community volunteers.
