Vancouver's English Bay slide (likely) to return this summer

"Staff will assess operational capacity after July 1 to ensure the slide can be deployed"

The English Bay slide (seen here in 1915, 1946 and 1956) has been a part of summers in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»for more than 100 years.

For more than a century Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»beach goers visiting English Bay beach were able to climb the stairs on a raft floating out in the water and slide down into the ocean below.

When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, the sliding was put on hiatus and the slide itself was tucked away by the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Board of Parks and Recreation.

Now it's likely being pulled back over to the beach, and should be ready to go this July.

"Our goal is to reintroduce the slide this summer," states the parks board in an email to V.I.A. "Following July 1, we will evaluate our operational capacity and explore the possibility of reopening at that time."

While restrictions keeping the slide out of the public areas lifted in 2022, the slide didn't return to the beachfront due to a lack of staff. Recently, due to "positive outcomes on hiring efforts," the parks board is "optimistic the slide will return in 2024."

"However, staff will assess operational capacity after July 1 to ensure the slide can be deployed," states the parks board.

If it can be "deployed" it'll be anchored by the beach until Labour Day.

"Operating hours will be limited to times when tides are safe, contingent upon having sufficient staff support," adds the parks board.

The slide has been around since the era of Joe Fortes, photos show some version of it existed back to 1913.

When asked how long a slide had existed at the beach, the parks board was uncertain.

"Unknown," replied the parks board.
