Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»home 'uninhabitable' after two alarm fire

Only one minor injury was reported.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»firefighters responded to a morning fire on Feb. 28 amid the heavy snowfall.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) got a call about a house fire in a single-family detached home in the Southlands at 9:12 a.m. Tuesday.

The two-alarm blaze took place at 3675 Southwest Marine Dr.

"Arriving fire crew found grey/brown smoke coming from roof eves," reads a VFRS news release. "Fire started from cooking in the kitchen from oil igniting in a pot on the stove."

There were 14 fire trucks on scene to help douse the blaze.

VFRS spokesperson Capt. Matthew Trudeau tells V.I.A. that the house is not going to be habitable due to substantial damage from the fire. A total of 10 people were displaced and have found alternative living arrangements.

Trudeau says everyone made it out of the house safely.

"One person received burn injuries to their arm and drove themselves to UBC hospital," says the news release.

The late-season snowfall did cause difficulties for fire crews.

"There were some vehicles that were either stalled or unable to move that created quite a jam up of vehicles in the area," says Trudeau. "It did make it challenging for our crews to get there in a timely fashion considering the weather."

VFRS reminds residents to be careful when cooking, ensure smoke alarms are working, and to have a home escape plan.
