Authorities responded to a reported explosion in Downtown Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Friday (Feb. 24) evening near the Marine Building at Burrard and Hastings streets.
"This explosion was very loud," tweeted @andeewho. Reports indicate the explosion happened shortly after 6 p.m.
Thick black smoke could be seen in photos shared of the scene.
A BC Hydro spokesperson tells V.I.A. that the fire occurred in one of the utility's electrical vaults on Burrard Street near West Cordova Street. BC Hydro is investigating the cause of the fire.
"We want to assure the public this is a rare occurrence and that we place high priority on ensuring our electrical equipment continues to be safe and reliable," says the spokesperson.
Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the explosion which blew out nearby windows and caused significant damage to the building, says Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) Asst. Chief Kane Morishita.
"Live fire and emergency situation at historic Marine Building in Downtown Vancouver," tweeted Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»City Councillior Sarah Kirby-Yung. "Please stay clear of the area and let Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Fire & Rescue with support from the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police Department do their work."
The area is cordoned off to allow crews to investigate.
SkyTrain Expo Line and SeaBus service has resumed with some gaps and Waterfront Station is open. The temporary bus bridge between Lonsdale Quay and Waterfront has ended.
