Developer wants to cap Gastown heritage building at iconic location with a new hotel

It's across the road from the steam clock! 🏨

After standing as-is for over 115 years, a heritage building in Vancouver's Gastown may get a new "cap" soon.

The Edward Hotel at the intersection of Water and Cambie streets was built in 1906; the across the street from Vancouver's famed steam clock was originally a hotel. In the near future, it could become a six-storey boutique hotel.

Including the two new floors, the hotel would bring 33 new rooms to Gastown.

is asking to add two floors to the top of the building as part of that plan. While the original structure will be kept intact, the proponent, Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership, is applying to build two modern-looking storeys on top.

"The two-storey addition uses modern material and construction, is contrasting in colour, and minimalistically detailed allowing it to be a separate architectural expression from the heritage building," they write in the application.

On top of everything will be a rooftop terrace.

They add that the plan includes a hotel lobby and restaurant on the ground floor; the building is currently home to the Water Street Cafe.
