This is what Vancouver's VanDusen Festival of Lights looked like back in the '80s (PHOTOS)

The beautiful Christmas lights event began more than 35 years ago and has been igniting festive cheer among its visitors ever since.

Wandering through VanDusen Botanical Garden's magical Festival of Lights display has become a fond holiday tradition for many Vancouverites.

Built on the former Shaughnessy Golf Course, the Botanical Garden opened to the public back in 1975. The beautiful Christmas lights event began decades ago and has been igniting festive cheer among its visitors ever since.

Nowadays, the dazzling winter wonderland has over a million twinkling lights throughout the garden. The festival also includes a breathtaking display on Livingstone Lake every 20 minutes, where lights dance to classic, disco, and soul music sets.

The magical event seems to get bigger and brighter every year.
