A Tesla passenger, who was pregnant, sustained a serious but non-life threatening injury after a large rock smashed through the windshield Sunday night.

A pregnant woman who was a passenger in a Tesla has been seriously injured after being struck by a large rock in Vancouver.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»police said the vehicle was moving and travelling north on Nanaimo Street around 8:45 p.m. on Sunday.

"This very serious incident could easily have resulted in someone’s death, but for a few inches,” said Sgt. Steve Addison.

As the vehicle passed East 27th Avenue, a two-pound rock smashed through the windshield and struck the pregnant woman. The woman sustained a serious, but non-life-threatening injury, according to police.

The woman was struck by the rock in her upper body and she has a broken bone. The rock then fell on the floorboard of the vehicle.

“We are working to determine whether this was a criminal act, and if someone intentionally targeted this Tesla,” said Addison.

Police have not been able to confirm yet where the rock came from or what caused it to strike the vehicle.

Investigators are canvassing the neighbourhood for evidence.
