The man accused of second-degree murder in the May fatal stabbing of a woman in Vancouver’s Olympic Village is going to plead not guilty and go to trial.
Jian Wei Wang, 50, is charged in Jian Ying “Angela” Du's death.
Police were called to a disturbance at an Olympic Village apartment building May 1. They found Du suffering from fatal stab wounds. She died at the scene.
Wang was arrested at the scene. Police say the pair knew each other but did not specify the relationship.
Wang is also charged with assaulting Du on May 22, 2021.
Earlier June 2021 bail conditions included an order Wang have no contact with Du.
Wang's lawyer, Talia Armstrong, told Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»provincial court Judge James Bahen Sept. 26 a pre-trial conference was being waived in the case which would proceed to a preliminary hearing. Such hearings are held to determine if enough evidence exists to proceed to trial.
Bahen heard eight witnesses, including police, would be called at that inquiry. A date for that will be set on Oct. 4.
A psychiatric assessment was to have been done, court heard.
A no-contact order for Du’s family remains in place.
“May I have contact with my mother?” Wang asked.
The judge at the time agreed to the request.
Wang remains in custody.
