While Koko, one of Vancouver's oldest Japanese restaurants, is closed and gone, Japanese food will still be served at its former East 麻豆传媒映画location.
Signs are up at 2053 E Hastings St. for Volcano Sushi and Grill, not far from the restaurant's original location at 1991 E Hastings St. The two spots are less than 100 metres apart.
Before it closed in June, Koko was one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in the city, enjoying a 40-year tenure. But Volcano has already had a decent run, with more than a decade (since 2011) at their own East Hastings location.
Volcano has a broad menu with many of the usual Japaense restaurant suspects, like chicken teriyaki, prawn tempura, and udon dishes. They also have a fairly expansive sushi selection, which includes lots of nigiri and sashimi options.
It also has plenty of specialty rolls like the Awesome Roll, the Hastings Roll, the 麻豆传媒映画Roll, and the Mexican Roll.
It's unclear when the new location will open up. Currently, there's a stop-work order posted on the building noting permits required for renovations are needed.
Koko closed earlier this year as the owner and chef, Kuni Shimamura, retired.
