The folks at East Van's Storm Brewing sent over word today that they're release a $1,000 bottle of bottle! And not just one bottle, ten of them. They're claiming it's "Canada's Most Expensive Beer".
clocks in at 25% ABV and they tell us that it resembles more of a Port than a beer. The reason why it's so expensive is because it comes in hand blown bottles featuring ancient mammoth ivory pendants constructed of a tusk that's more than 35,000 years old. The bottles were blown buy local artist Brad Turner and the mammoth pendants by sculptor Richard Marcus
But back to the alcohol volume in these beers. I've been in and around enough breweries in this province to know that 25% is wayyyy above what the LDB allows local craft breweries to pump out. Their head brewer james Walton tells me that the liquor board gave them approval because "They told us this is a 'ground breaking' new category of beer and we are pioneering it."
The feds at the Canadian Excise Department are also interested in it. According to James, "We aren't sure if they will want us to get a distilling license because we used what is considered a freeze distillation process to create this beer at the 25% alcohol content. However, it is part of our heritage as Canadians to have icy cold winters which are perfect for making this beer naturally. Maybe not in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»but... whatever!"
