OUR LOCAL CRAFT brings you the essential deets of craft beer brewed in BC.  The art of craft brewing is one that relies on creativity, quality ingredients, and industrious people who have a passion for great beer.  So raise a glass to the beer ‘round here and get to know BC’s brewing community.

The Beer: Ugly Sweater – This seasonal stout is 5% alcohol and 40 IUBs (International Bitterness Units).

Brewed just in time for winter and adeptly named to accompany parties featuring appalling knits, Ugly Sweater is a limited seasonal and will be available through January.  Its a milk stout; lactose is added along with chocolate and black malt to create a dark, rich, and slightly sweet brew.

The Brewery:  Parallel 49 Brewing Company.

49th Parallel opened their doors in May 2012.  In just one and a half years, they’ve doubled their production, released over 30 beers, expanded sales beyond BC to Ontario and even the United States, and cleaned up with eight prizes at this year’s BC Beer Awards – these guys are winning!

The People:  Graham With is the brewer and creative director behind the many flavours of Parallel 49.

The Paring:  Graham recommends pairing the rich flavours of Ugly Sweater with decadent piece of black forest chocolate cake.

The Location:  Swing by the tasting room at 1950 Triumph Street to fill your growler with Ugly Sweater for $10 or sip on a sleeve of this sweet brew for $3.  Otherwise you can find Parallel 49 beer in a plethora of restaurants and liquor stores.

Fun Fact:  Two weeks ago, Parallel 49 installed and infusion tap in their tasting room.  This tap is fitted with a transparent chamber, which is loaded with different flavour infusions each day (cinnamon and orange zest was on offer the day we visited).  Now patrons will be able to sample a new beer every day.
