With bright colours, a little one-armed bandit, and a sign that looks like a marquee from Sin City, has opened up in Vancouver.
Located at King Edward and Knight Street, the new shop is co-owned by Mike McBean and his brother, Steve. Inspiration came from their grandparents, who owned a donut shop in Vegas in the 1960s. Some of their recipes come from their family, too, like the cream-filled and powder sugar-dusted yeast donuts that sit upright in cups.
The shop had a soft opening in early May and things have been ramping up "Vegas style" he tells V.I.A.
A grand opening is planned for Saturday, May 11.
"Elvis will be here and we're going to have a patio donut party," says McBean.
Despite just opening a few days ago, the shop is going through their product quickly, he adds.
"We're filling the cases twice a day and then we're closing early because we're selling out," he says.
Among their sweet treats are cake donuts with Americana or Vegas-themed names (like All In, Jack Lemon, or Cherry Lewis), a daily fritter (with a different fruit each day), and Golden Nuggets (aka donut holes). They also have a few exotic flavours, including a dill pickle and cream cheese one.
"You'd think it's a little wild at first, but it's actually quite delicious," says McBean. "The first guy we gave it to, he was uncertain at first. But he walked away and in the parking lot he turned and gave us a thumbs up."
The new shop is located at 4003 Knight St and is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily (except Sundays), though McBean says later hours may be coming for weekend nights.
