The end has come for a Vancouver-based casual Mexican restaurant, as announced Monday (Dec. 11) the immediate closure of its two remaining locations.
"This decision has not come easily," remark Tacomio's owners in their heartfelt farewell message, posted to the restaurant's website and social media. "The severe impacts of COVID-19, escalating costs, rent hikes, government taxes, and labour shortages have created an environment where continuing our journey has become untenable."
Recently, Tacomio closed up its North 鶹ýӳtaco shop, located at 1300 Lonsdale Ave, leaving its "marketplace" outposts in East 鶹ýӳ(1245 Glen Dr) and UBC (6025 University Blvd) its only two remaining - until today.
Tacomio began in Gastown in 2015, occupying a humble space on Abbott between Hastings and Pender. There, chef-owner Fhernando Llanas brought his authentic Mexican food to fans of tacos and burritos, showcasing braised meats and housemade salsas.
Ultimately, Tacomio left that space, but not before expanding to the North Shore and across Vancouver.
The restaurant remained focused on its roots of serving a menu of approachable casual Mexican fare, including housemade chips, sauces and condiments, tacos, and burritos. From its Strathcona pick-up window, Tacomio sold family-size taco take-home kits, popularized during the pandemic when dining out was off the table.
"This journey has been one of passion, joy, and countless shared moments, all of which have been made possible by you. Your support has been the cornerstone of our success, and for that, we are eternally grateful," describe Tacomio's owners in their closure notice.
The restaurant owners also thank their customers and staff for their loyalty through the years.
Tacomio suggests they may return sooner than later: "Though this chapter closes, our spirit of adventure and creativity remains alive. Keep your eyes on this space - we’re excited about future projects and hope to bring new experiences to in the future."
The following is Tacomio's closure letter in full:
Dear cherished Tacomio family and friends,
Today, we reach out with a heart full of emotions to share a significant change. With deep sadness, we must announce that all Tacomio branches are closing their doors permanently, effective immediately.
For the past nine years, Tacomio has been more than just a restaurant; it has been a vibrant community where friendships blossomed and memories were made. Each neighborhood we’ve been a part of has left an indelible mark on our hearts, and the relationships we’ve built with so many of you are treasures we will carry forever.
This decision has not come easily. The severe impacts of COVID-19, escalating costs, rent hikes, government taxes, and labor shortages have created an environment where continuing our journey has become untenable.
From our humble beginnings in Gastown nine years ago, to growing across the city, our family’s dream has flourished thanks to your unwavering support and loyalty. This journey has been one of passion, joy, and countless shared moments, all of which have been made possible by you. Your support has been the cornerstone of our success, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
As we say goodbye, we extend our deepest gratitude to our amazing staff. You have been the backbone of the Tacomio dream. Your hard work, dedication, and passion have been instrumental in bringing our vision to life. We offer our most sincere thanks for your commitment throughout these years.
To our beloved customers - you have been more than patrons; you have been a vital part of the Tacomio family. The laughter, conversations, and connections that have filled our spaces will be cherished always.
Though this chapter closes, our spirit of adventure and creativity remains alive. Keep your eyes on this space - we’re excited about future projects and hope to bring new experiences to in the future. Stay connected with us 🫶🏼
Thank you for being a part of our story. Your support, kindness, and loyalty will forever be remembered and appreciated.
With heartfelt thanks and loving regards,
Fher, Cleo and Mamá Minnie 💕🙏🏼
