Land & Sea restaurant relaunches under new name, Okini

Diners will still find traditional and modern Japanese flavours with a West Coast interpretation

A popular Kerrisdale dining destination is starting a new chapter thanks to a name change and a bit of behind-the-scenes tweaks for ownership.

Land & Sea was a striking newcomer on Vancouver's dining scene in 2021, and now with nearly two years under their belts, duo Steph Wan and Chef Kevin Lin have assumed full ownership and have implemented a name change and rebrand. Their venture at 1864 W 57th Ave is now - though the menu remains Pacific West Coast modern fare with strong Japanese influence.

Okini means "great appreciation and gratitude" in the Kansai dialect of Japanese, explain Lin and Wan in a media release. Okini's owners say the new name is "a heartfelt expression of their deep appreciation for their patrons, dedicated team, and the vibrant city of Vancouver," and a reflection of their own culinary journey.

“Our commitment to using locally sourced, sustainable ingredients whenever possible remains unchanged, ensuring that each plate is a marriage of our dedication to quality while maintaining both traditional and modern Japanese flavours with our West Coast interpretation,” adds Lin.

On the menu are dishes like Hokkaido Uni Toast, Wagyu Bolognese, and the restaurant's popular Salmon Soba dish, along with fresh-shucked oysters, Miso Glazed Sablefish, Vongole XO, and a Black Sesame Chocolate Brownie for dessert.

For its reboot under the Okini banner, Wan and the bar team have launched a new cocktail lineup, with drinks on the theme of "falling in love." Okini has also expanded its offerings on the wine and sake lists.

Lin and Wan, who recently stepped away from another project, Darkside, are focusing their energies solely on Okini now. Okini is currently open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday from 5 p.m., and while reservations are recommended, walk-ins are always welcome. Guests may also opt to dine on Okini's patio when the weather is favourable.
