Koko Monk Chocolates' original West 1st Avenue location, opened in 2013, has closed. The business will continue to operate its shop on West Broadway

From single-origin unprocessed bars to artisanal chocolates, or the dozens of wildly inventive hot chocolate flavours they are most known for, Kitsilano's  has been making chocolate dreams come true in its tiny West 1st Avenue shop since 2013.

This week, Koko Monk's owner Paul Dincer shared the news that the chocolate shop at 1849 W 1st Ave - one of two in Kits he runs - has closed.

"Sadly, we are at the end of the life span at our original location," begins the notice shared with customers. "As a space shuttle releases a module, embarking on its own path among the stars, so must we let go of our beloved spot here."

Those familiar with Koko Monk will probably not be surprised to see Dincer's creative deployment of a simile to deliver the bittersweet news. That's because Koko Monk - i.e. Dincer - is known for being wildly creative and fond of flights of fancy (not to mention flights of chocolate or hot chocolate).

Melding his love of literature with the science of chocolate into one sweet passion, Dincer creates an array of beautiful flavour combinations and works with a deep respect for his ingredients--namely the chocolate itself.

Koko Monk's chocolates are refined sugar-free and the shop is known for its focus on whole foods and nutrition.

Hot Chocolate Festival a popular annual event for Koko Monk

But Koko Monk is also about the joy of chocolate. That said, it's probably hot chocolate that most Vancouverites, and many a visitor, have come to know Koko Monk for. Each year they outdo themselves with creativity for the Hot Chocolate Festival, coming up with creations with names as eye-popping as the ingredient list.

Five years after opening his shop on West 1st Avenue, Dincer opened a second shop in October 2018 nearby on West Broadway.

The younger Koko Monk will remain open.

"Though this chapter ends, our journey continues at 2883 W Broadway, fulled by your unwavering support," continues the farewell message.

With the closure, Koko Monk's fans are urged to join the chocolate shop's team as they "soar onward."
