Sitar Indian Restaurant at 8 Powell St has closed after 41 years of serving Indian food in Vancouver

After 41 years in the business, Vancouver's has closed its doors permanently.

A hand-written sign indicating the closure posted to the restaurant's exterior offers a simple thank you from the management.

Located at 8 Powell St, Sitar had been a neighbourhood fixture since 1983.

More recently, its block-mate, popular cocktail bar The Diamond, ended its storied run last summer. Its closure was prompted by the death of the former owner of the building, "Diamond" Jack Wiley, and the entire building (2-12 Powell St and 200 Carrall St) .

The extensive property was .

Another business on the block, Italian restaurant Robba da Matti (12 Powell St) has been listed for sale for some time. So far, Robba da Matti has not indicated it is closing yet.

Fans of Sitar hailed the eatery as a reliable and low-key go-to for traditional Indian fare, like vegetable samosas, butter chicken, curries, and naan.

A call to the restaurant rang with no answer, and Sitar appears to not have a social media presence.
