Welcome back to On the Beer Stump () where I feature and rate British Columbia craft beers available in bottles and cans. Today on the stump we've got Fernie's which I last week on The Peak 102.7fm, along with a couple other winter beers ( and ).
Fernie Brewing Company's Sapsucker Maple Porter – 5% ABV | IBU 35
QUALITY/TASTE: 8/10
PACKAGING/BRANDING/STORY: 9/10
TOTAL SCORE: 17/20
If there's a more Canadian winter beer I have yet to find it as the ingredients are water, malted barley, hops, yeast, and... maple syrup. Surprisingly similar in taste to GIB's Lions Winter Ale this porter will serve you well sitting by a cozy fire during these months but, like that ale it's not one you're going to want to have more than one glass of in a sitting.
I mentioned Fernie Brewing Co's subtle rebrand when I introduced you to one of my favourite beers in the world, their huckleberry wheat ale (), but upon reflection I didn't rave about it as hard as I should have. Looking back on their packaging from just a couple months back I can see that what they've done with their makeover (care of Gastown design agency ) is brought things together in order to tell a more cohesive story. Now when you go looking for Fernie beers at the liquor store you'll be able to spot them before you pick them up. Not only is it consistent in look, but the quality of the design is a 9/10. Excellent.
