One of Vancouver's most exciting restaurants to open in 2024 has eased into spring this year by adding new weekend and holiday long weekend brunch service.
, which is located in an eye-catching new build that incorporates the exterior of the nearly century-old duplex on the property and is named for the moon goddess, opened its doors last fall and quickly caught a lot of buzz for its Greek-Turkish dinner menu.
For , Selene is keeping the weekend ritual serene with Mediterranean riffs on morning classics while working in some traditional Aegean fare.
Standouts include big, fluffy potato balls (patatokeftades) served atop garlicky tzatziki and a juicy, tender ribeye cap steak served with a soft boiled egg atop silky hummus (you'll want to order a side of pita for this one). A great share plate to start with is the pide, a traditional flatbread topped with creamy, salty cheese, herbs, and a jammy fried egg.
From the sweet side, Selene's top contender for signature must-try brunch dish is the Pistachio Honey Toast. This is gorgeously crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside with a mound of whipped ganache topped with toasted coconut, and cynar and orange blossom syrup. Imagine if French Toast and sticky, crispy baklava had a baby and this is it.
For those imbibing, Selene's bar is turning out one of the best riffs on a Caesar, called the Kaisaras. It's smoky and hot from harissa and tangy from pickle-infused vodka, and it may be my favourite take on the classic Candian brunch bev ever.
Brunch at Selene Aegean Bistro is served weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations are available through .
