"Obviously sex stuff, that's a given.”
That’s Sophie Buddle describing what’s likely going to be in her first stand-up comedy special to premiere on Crave TV at the end of the month.
Not only is it Buddle’s first special, but as far as she knows it will be the first comedy special produced by Just For Laughs created by a Vancouverite. Buddle is somewhat of a staple in the Canadian comedy scene having won a Juno Award for her 2019 comedy album A Lil Bit of Buddle and working as a television writer for the sketch comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
Last year Buddle’s standup performances were put on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It was that hiatus that made getting the call from Just For Laughs to create the special that much sweeter.
"I spent the whole year like everybody else kinda thinking my life and my career was over then this offer came in and now I feel a whole lot better," Buddle said in a recent interview with Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³».
Having been a comic for 11 years she has watched many comedy specials and now being at the helm of her own she has a new level of freedom.
"I really have a lot more control than usual,” Buddle said. “Usually I have to clear all my jokes and stuff like that but because it’s for Crave I can really go pretty hard."
"I've been putting my set together for mine and just kind of picking my favourite jokes that I've done over the past couple years and it’s looking really dirty right now so I'm not sure if I should water it down!"
While she is trying to decide how jarring she wants the special to be for her friends and family who have never seen her perform before, there are some topics she guarantees will be included.
"Obviously sex stuff, that's a given,” Buddle said adding she’s not afraid of taking on troubling or even triggering subjects.
To prepare for the recording, Buddle is performing a dry run of the set at the Little Mountain Gallery in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»this Friday. To Buddle’s surprise, tickets to the show sold out in the first few hours.
In light of her special Buddle says she is excited to see Canadian comics getting their own specials, a mostly American-dominated medium.
“There's not really a system in place for Canadian comics to have our own but Just For Laughs and Crave is really making a nice effort to give Canadians more of a chance to shine," she said.
