Nearly 20 mm of rain predicted for Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­may dampen Family Day

The good news: temperatures are all positive for Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­this Family Day.

The bad news: the sun may not come back for a lengthy period of time.

V.I.A.'s Weatherhood is predicting nearly 20 mm of rain for Sunday, Feb. 16 for downtown Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­and its western-area neighbourhoods. This includes Yaletown, Stanley Park, Kitsilano, UBC, Mount Pleasant and False Creek.

The sun is expected to stick around for Valentine's Day today before the clouds and 10 km/h winds roll in for the remainder of the long weekend.

Temperatures are predicted to reach a high of 8 C on Sunday and a low of 4 C.

Meanwhile, Vancouver's south and eastern communities may earn a slightly warmer Family Day Monday.

Inland areas like South Vancouver, Dunbar, Trout Lake and Strathcona are expected to reel in a high of 10 C and rainfall between 10 and 15 mm.

It also may not be as windy with winds of less than 5 km/h. 

Warming centres still open

And while the mercury may not dip into the negatives this weekend, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­still has  open for the public to seek refuge from the cold.

This includes community centres, public libraries and other civic buildings during their operating hours:

Powell Street Getaway

  • Hours of operation: 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. (closed on Saturday)
    • Drop-in site
    • All genders, couples are welcome (bikes and carts are OK)
    • Hot beverages and snacks are available

Mt. Pleasant Community Centre

  • Hours of operations: 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (Saturday, Sunday), 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. (Friday, Monday)
    • All genders, couples are welcome (pets OK)
    • Hot beverages and snacks are available

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Community Services Office

  • Hours of operation: 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
    • All genders, couples are welcome (bikes and carts are OK)

Odd Fellows Hall

  • Hours of operations: 9:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Sunday and Monday

Parish of St. Mary’s Kerrisdale

  • Hours of operation: 8:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • All genders, couples are welcome (carts OK outside)

West End Community Centre

  • Hours of operation: 5:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. (Saturday, Sunday), 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. (Friday, Monday)

It's not known if Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­will re-open extreme weather shelters overnight or this weekend, which closed Thursday morning.

According to the city, shelters are put in place when temperatures are near 0 C with rainfall "that makes it difficult or impossible for those experiencing homelessness to remain dry."

As well, shelters can open when any of the following occurs:

  • Sleet or freezing rain
  • Snow accumulation
  • Sustained high winds
  • Temperatures at or below 0 C, or "feels like" 0 C with wind chill
  • Rainfall of at least 50 mm in a 24-hour period
