A section of the seawall in Stanley Park has been closed due to stormy weather and high water.

A section of the seawall in Stanley Park has been closed as a winter weather system descends on Vancouver.

The popular walking and cycling route around the park is being battered by waves and wind as Arctic air arrives in the region. At least one section of the seawall has been closed to the public and park staff are monitoring the situation; they will open and close sections as needed.

"Staff are closely monitoring the changing weather patterns and will close sections of the seawall as and when necessary to help keep the public safe from surging tides and overhead hazards," according to a parks spokesperson.

They ask the public to respect the closures and staff efforts, which started before the stormy weather arrived.

"Park Board staff make annual preparations to manage winter weather events such as this, including removing debris such as washed up logs from shorelines and placing sandbags at specific coastal areas to protect infrastructure against rising water levels," the spokesperson tells V.I.A.
