WestJet is working to provide all its customers with free wireless internet access on all its domestic and international flights.
The airline announced Wednesday, July 24, that it has partnered with Telus to provide high-speed internet delivered by Starlink on board WestJet aircraft.
Developed by SpaceX, Starlink uses satellites in a "low-Earth orbit at an altitude over 65 times closer than conventional geostationary satellites" to achieve a significantly stronger and faster internet connection. It started servicing commercial aircraft in 2023.
Using the Starlink technology, customers can enjoy activities previously not functional in flight, like gaming and other online activities with high data rates.
WestJet and Telus will work on a multi-year plan to transform the inflight experience for guests.
The carrier will be the largest North American and first commercial Boeing 737 airline to offer inflight connectivity powered by Starlink's "best-in-class technology platform, which includes the world's largest satellite constellation."
When can I enjoy free wifi on WestJet?
WestJet plans to introduce the new platform on flights before the end of 2024 and complete the installation on its narrowbody fleet by the end of 2025. All wide-body aircraft are planned to be upgraded by the end of 2026.
Access to the new inflight system will be exclusively provided to members for free. The program is free to join by creating an account with the airline online anytime before their flight.
Other Canadian airlines offer internet in the aircraft but do not utilize the Starlink technology. Porter Airlines offers free internet to all guests while Air Canada offers it on select routes.
Air Canada offers internet for a fee in one-hour, one-way, or monthly passes starting at $6.50.
