Travel advisory: Canada warns of terrorist threat in the United Kingdom

Most incidents occurred in London but have happened elsewhere, including Ireland.

Canada has issued a travel warning for the United Kingdom due to a risk of terrorism in August 2024, including Northern Ireland and London England.

The Canadian government is warning travellers of an in the United Kingdom. 

Canada updated its travel advice for the U.K. on August 7 following violent demonstrations across the country, with previous attacks resulting in deaths. 

Random violent incidents occurred in public areas and included "knife and vehicle incidents and explosions."

Most incidents occurred in London, England but have happened elsewhere, including Ireland. 

The U.K. government has a public alert system for terrorism and communicates the  level changes online and through local media.

The national terrorism and national emergency threat level is currently three (“substantial”) on a scale of five. A separate threat level for Northern Ireland is currently at four (“severe”) on a scale of five.

Canada warns of terrorism in the United Kingdom 

The Canadian government believes further terrorist attacks in the U.K. are likely. 

Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Visitors should remain vigilant and be aware of their surroundings in public places. They should exercise extra caution if attending: 

  • sporting events
  • religious holidays
  • public celebrations
  • major political events, such as elections

Terrorists have used big events to mount attacks. 

Demonstrations occur frequently in the U.K. and recent ones have erupted in violent clashes, resulting in "assaults, riots, looting and vandalism." They can deteriorate quickly and lead to disruptions in traffic and public transportation.
