The Britannia Mine Museum is an historical landmark on the Sea-to-Sky Highway between ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½Σ³»and Squamish. After it stopped producing copper and zinc in the early 1970s, the Britannia mine was turned into a museum, where visitors can take underground rail rides into the mine’s tunnels.

The mine’s processing mill has a unique design. The 20-story high mill was built up against a cliff, allowing a concentrator to be fed with ore by gravity.

Dynamic Attractions, which has built thrill rides for Disney and other theme parks around the world, will use the vast interior to create an indoor theme park of sorts that will give visitors an immersive experience on the history of the Britannia mine. The new attraction is expected to open in the spring of 2019.

β€œThe show will transport visitors back in time for an authentic, thrilling, visceral and acoustic experience, taking advantage of the sheer mass and awe of the 20-storey historical mill building,” said Kirstin Clausen, executive director of the Britannia Mine Museum.

The project is being partially funded through a $1.4 million federal grant under the New Building Canada Fund. Another $2.8 million was raised by the museum, with contributions from the B.C. mining industry and provincial government.
