TransLink will increase bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus service in time for its busiest week of the year, starting Sept. 3.

The transit agency says the new service will increase capacity while shortening wait times.

“Regardless of where you are travelling to or from, service increases in the SeaBus and SkyTrain network will help decrease the length of your commute and will help address the constraints of growing ridership,” said MP Terry Beech, whose Liberal government has partially funded the expansion.

TransLink will roll out 24 new SkyTrain cars (in six trains) on the Millennium and Expo lines, increased service to 12 bus routes and an increase to SeaBus service providing 10-minute service.

NDP MLA Janet Routledge touted the province’s “historic” investment in transit. Speaking from the Production-Way University station, where many Simon Fraser University students transfer, she said the expansion will help many of those students.

“With these changes happening just in time for back-to-school, students will have less stress getting to class on time. Or, perhaps, one less excuse for being late,” Routledge said.

TransLink’s biggest service change this September will be upgrading the 503 route to express service between Langley and Surrey. There will also be double-decker buses added to the 301 route between Newton Exchange and Brighouse station. And the N17 night bus between downtown 鶹ýӳand the University of B.C.

Other bus routes receiving increased service:

  • 5 Robson/downtown Vancouver
  • 6 Davie/downtown Vancouver
  • 7 Nanaimo Station/Dunbar
  • 19 Metrotown/Stanley Park
  • 49 Metrotown/Dunbar Loop/UBC
  • 99 B-Line Commerical-Broadway/UBC
  • 112 Edmonds Station/New Westminster Station
  • 116 Edmonds Station/Metrotown Station
  • 342 Netwon Exchange/Langley Centre

“Today's expansion is very good news for the entire region," Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley said.
