In the name of exercise, vitamin D, quality family time and leaving the car at home, we spend every spare moment we can exploring Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­on two wheels.  Cycling with kids is an enjoyable way to get active as a family but there are lots of things to consider before embarking on your family bike ride. All about Safety

Think about safety first, especially if this is the first ride of the season and your bike has been in storage over the winter.  A tune up to make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight, and the chain is properly lubricated, is essential before going on a ride.

Make sure your bike is still the right fit - have your child stand over their bicycle and check to see where the crossbar of the bike reaches their legs.  Road bikes should leave 1 to 2 inches of space and mountain bikes should leave 3 to 4 inches of space.  It it's a little off, the solution should be a simple seat adjustment.

Educate your child about the rules of the road, for cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles.  It doesn't have to be a one-time lesson, but as you go about your daily routine, keep them aware of their surroundings and teach them proper hand signals.

Make sure your child has the appropriate gear for a bike ride - including a helmet that fits snugly and gear that makes them visible in their surroundings.  Bright clothes and reflective tape can make a huge difference.

Be Aware of your Route

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­boasts some incredible bike routes that are suitable for kids.  Before hitting the pavement, make sure a clear route has been planned in advance.  It's important to be aware of the distance of the route, and the level.  Here are few kid friendly bike routes in Vancouver:

The Stanley Park Circle - Vancouver

Vancouver's most popular bike route, the Stanley Park Seawall is great for all ages and on a nice warm day, the kids can take a break at the waterpark.

False Creek Circle - Vancouver

One of the best things about biking in False Creek is the option to taking the Cycle Ferry to where you started if your child gets too tired.  This scenic routes takes you past Science World, Granville Island and the Olympic Village.

Steveston - Richmond

With fresh fish and chips at the Steveston Warf, the Cannery Museum and lots of art installations, your child will be using all of their senses during this bike ride in Richmond.

Consider Water and Snacks

Going hand-in-hand with planning one's route, it's essential to consider the amount of nourishment you and your child will need.  Depending on the length of your route, and what challenge level it is, it's important to bring more than enough water for everyone, and healthy snacks to make sure energy levels stay high.  Consider making a day out of your ride and pack a picnic lunch along the way.
