The British Columbia government was expected to announce Tuesday that some highway speed limit increases put in place more than four years ago are being dialled back.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena was to be in Victoria to unveil what the ministry calls a safety announcement regarding changes to speed limits on certain B.C. highways.
The move follows a University of British Columbia study released last month that revealed fatal crashes have doubled on some highways where faster speeds are permitted.
Trevena later called the data startling and said staff were examining the limits to see if they were appropriate in all areas.
Speed limits were boosted between 10 and 20 kilometres per hour on 33 stretches of highway in July 2014.
The highest speed of 120 kilometres per hour was approved for Highway 5 from Hope to Kamloops, part of Highway 97C between Merritt and Peachland and Highway 19 between Parksville and Campbell River on Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Island.
