This past weekend the kind folks at flew us over to Salt Spring Island to visit one of the V.I.A. not-for-profit's board of directors for an amazing weekend trip. This little airline flies their 6-passenger floatplanes out of Coal Harbour and out of the airport and over the next few days I'll be sharing five reasons why you should take a trip to this magical little island with them.
Reason #4 isn't specifically about the airline itself but is yet another one of the amazing things you'll discover when you step off one of their planes and onto the island: the beauty of their small community. This photo below isn't simply of a bunch of cartons in a fridge, it was taken inside an unmanned store on the side of the road where you walk in, you take your eggs out of the fridge and you leave the money for them in a coffee can. Somebody comes into the store once a day to empty their money jar and restock the egg supply. Seriously.
There's also enough lawnmowers kicking around to employ a lawnmower repairman full time...
And every Saturday there's a public market right in the heart of the town where the rules for vendors are basically that everything they sell has to be grown, produced, cooked, etc on the island...
There are a billion other things that make this community a great place to visit. Come back tomorrow for Reason #5 why you should fly with Salt Spring Air to get there and in the meantime be sure to check out for the latest info and last minute travel deals.
