Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon says a crossing to replace or augment the George Massey Tunnel remains a high priority for the NDP government and that a business case on the best option will be ready next year.
鈥淭he work is still ongoing and we鈥檙e not studying any more, now we鈥檙e just looking at a business plan with three options and we鈥檒l decide what the best option is,鈥 Kahlon told the Optimist.
鈥淚 know that the minister (Claire Trevena) is going to be working actively with the mayors in the region, like Richmond, White Rock and Delta, of course, and we鈥檒l find a solution that makes the most sense.鈥
The province late last year came out with a long-awaited announcement regarding the future of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. Trevena and consultant Stan Cowdell confirmed the 10-lane bridge project initiated by the previous Liberal government won鈥檛 be moving ahead.
Cowdell鈥檚 report suggested options could include a six- or eight-lane bridge or an eight-lane tunnel. The existing tunnel could also remain as part of a solution.
Trevena said there would be interim upgrades to the existing tunnel and road system costing $40 million.
