The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has inked an with Konami Gaming to digitize BC Gold slots in 27 BC casinos across the province. The aim of the agreement is to revitalize the brand by moving from its longstanding traditional mechanical reel stepper slot machines into the realm of immersive, interactive video slots.

Konami Gaming intends to debut 245 new video slots in all 27 of the casinos by early 2027. Since the existing games are still immensely popular, Konami Gaming assures that the upgrades will preserve the BC Gold connection with the mining history of the province, and all the old favourites will remain, just in an enhanced form.

The BCLC is a government-owned Crown organization that has the mandate to oversee all gambling activities in the province. The BC Gold system uses a double-layer progressive jackpot format, which allows players at different physical locations to compete together for rewards like the Mystery Gold Jackpot. This could offer winnings in excess of $100,000. The jackpots are funded by all the players, accumulating their bets into a total betting value that pushes up the jackpot until it's won. The modernization agreement came only once the BCLC had conducted an in-depth (VRP) analysis on all contenders vying for the contract. This took seven months to complete. Konami Gaming came in first on its metrics, which included technical requirements, business exigencies, game design and even win celebration elements. It also showed itself to be the most compatible with BCLC's future intentions.

Commenting on the partnership, President and Chief Executive Officer of Konami Gaming Steve Sutherland, noted that the are to use the technology refreshment to entice new player engagement and provide a more contemporary digital appeal for younger adults. He also notes Konami Gaming's commitment to working closely with the BCLC to meet its ongoing requirements and provide exciting, secure gaming in British Columbia's casinos for the long-term.

Replacing mechanical reels with digital ones vastly broadens the scope of the user experiences that can be offered. These slots will introduce  like immersive themes, often associated with the latest movies and video games, dynamic CGI and bonus round mini-games. These will have been purpose-designed to appeal to the tastes of today's players. Konami Gaming intends to use these new games to offer a combination of modern digital entertainment with the nostalgia of British Columbia's mining heritage.

The partnership between BCLC and Konami Gaming mirrors a wider trend in the casino sector towards digitalization and modernization to create enhanced player experiences and increase game engagement.
