Music is a common language; it dissolves barriers and strengthens bonds between people from many walks of life.
Vancouver’s creates and produces performances that deepen audiences’ understanding of the disability experience. The theatre company envisions a barrier-free diverse performing arts world that reflects the real world and all of its people.
On May 5 and May 14, Realwheels Theatre will present Wheel Voices: Tune In!, a virtual performance that weaves personal stories rooted in the disability experience with passionate anthemic scenes, and one hilarious comedic take on revenge fantasy.
Realwheels performers will come together in an online collaboration, demonstrating a range of talents across genres, performing a mashup of original scenes, rap, spoken word, and choral pieces.
Wheel Voices: Tune In! features a cast of fourteen Vancouver-based community artists: Amy Amantea, Jochen (Joe) Biertumpel, James Brown, Emily Grace Brook, Amelia Cooper, Kristy Kassie, Greg “Spokes” Labine, Sharon Liu, Laura Mackenrot, Caspar Ryan, Kristina Shelden, Dave Symington, Andrew Vallance, and Brandon Wilkinson.
Edgy, poignant, funny as hell, and full of heart, this project is supported by a diverse artistic team, including Facilitator Shawn Macdonald, Musical Director Caitriona Murphy, Video & Sound Designer Kimit Sekhon, and Artistic Director Rena Cohen.
Originally scheduled for production in May 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic, get ready to finally enjoy the much-anticipated culmination of online rehearsals, innovation, and tenacity from the cast and crew.
Tune In! is the newest project under the Wheel Voices programming banner, with previous projects including Wheel Voices: Power Play (2018), Comedy on Wheels (2017), and SexyVoices – A Burlesque Theatre Cabaret (2016).
Wheel Voices: Tune In! will be performed on two separate dates to accommodate different accessibility needs:
- The first performance on Wednesday, May 5th at 7 PM will feature ASL interpretation, along with a live Q&A with the cast and crew after the show.
- The second performance on Friday, May 14th 7 PM will feature audio description and captioning.
