There are a few ways to unclog a clogged sink.

So you’re washing the dishes after dinner, and you notice the water level in the sink is getting higher…

and higher, and higher…

You have no choice but to put the rest of your dirty dishes down and wonder; why is the sink clogged again!?

A clogged sink is a common plumbing issue and can be caused by a single obstruction or debris buildup. The initial troubleshooting steps to take are very simple and can often do the trick.

If you don’t see any results from following the steps below, it may be time to call in backup. Fortunately the professionals at are standing by to help you with any and all of your plumbing needs.

So here’s what you should do when your sink just won’t drain:

Run some hot water

First, remove any standing water you have in your sink. Boil water and slowly pour it down the drain. Test the drain after you’ve poured the hot water down it with your faucet to see if things are draining any quicker. If not, repeat the process until the sink begins to drain properly.

Use vinegar and water

If the hot water isn’t enough, you can try a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Once again, remove all standing water. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one cup of vinegar. Place a cover or stopper over the drain and let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes have passed, follow with hot water down the drain to clear any loosened debris.

Plunge

If 1 and 2 haven’t worked, it’s time to bring in the reinforcements; a plunger!

Although a bathroom plunger will work, a flat-bottom plunger should be used for best results. Place the plunger over the drain and fill your sink about halfway with hot water, creating a seal over the drain. Once the sink is half full, begin plunging up and down in short spurts. Lift the plunger and test the drain by opening the faucet. Repeat the process until you see the desired result.

If all of the above doesn’t work, some other troubleshooting options are to check your garbage disposal for a blockage, open and check the P-Trap (elbow-shaped pipe under the sink) to make sure there’s no accumulation or bring in even more reinforcements, like using a plumber’s snake.
