To celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial, local film-haven, The Cinematheque will participate in the most ambitious retrospective of Canada’s cinematic heritage ever mounted. Yes, will celebrate Canada’s rich history with FREE screenings of Canadian moving-image works throughout the year!
The series will kick-off Friday, January 6 with Sandy Wilson’s Genie-winning feature My American Cousin (1985) and Emily Carr grads Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis’ Palme d’Or-winning animated short When the Day Breaks (1999). The screening will be preceded by a reception, an excellent opportunity to rub elbows with fellow Canadian film-buffs. Make sure to arrive early, attendance is based on a first come, first served basis!
Each of these free screenings will pull from a list of 150 fantastic Canadian moving-image works, many of which have been freshly restored for your viewing pleasure. This grab-bag of cinema was carefully compiled by selection of Canadian critics, scholars, and industry professionals, ensuring that you’ll truly be seeing the best-of-the-best. is running in select theatres nationwide as a way to highlight our country’s cinematic achievements. Fortunately for Vancouverites, the Cinematheque is the only theatre in the Province taking part. Expect everything from feature films, to documentaries, animated shorts, experimental video to music videos, each with their own uniquely Canadian twist. The initiative is being co-produced by TIFF, The Cinematheque, Library and Archives Canada, and the Cinémathèque Québécoise, a true coming together of Canadian culture.
