Offering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that celebrates Indigenous cultures and is open to all people, the development is rooted in the Indigenous community.
The project is developed, owned and managed by Aboriginal Land Trust, a subsidiary of Lu'ma Native Housing Society, a B.C.-based, Indigenous-owned non-profit society that has been providing homes to people in 鶹ýӳfor over 40 years.
Ch’ich’iyúy is named for Ch’ich’iyúy Elxwíkn (Chay-chay-yoy Ull-x-wake-un), the mountain peaks on the North Shore that watch over the traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples.
To add cultural connection through Indigenous artwork, a large-scale art piece will prominently feature on the exterior of the building. Additional art and interpretive graphics will be commissioned by local Indigenous artists and incorporated throughout the building.
Property amenities will include multiple community gathering spaces inspired by Indigenous culture and traditions, including a Coast Salish longhouse that can accommodate 70 people, a Sky Garden overlooking the mountains with a community BBQ and outdoor play area for children, an urban forest area with plant species native to the Pacific Northwest and Squamish Estuary, and raised garden beds.
