For a community to truly thrive, those living there need to be able to access what it has to offer. A good neighbour helps communities make that connection.

This notion drives the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Fraser Port Authority’s community investment work.

A significant goal within the port authority’s vision to make the Port of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»the includes inspiring community connections through initiatives benefiting local communities.

That’s where the Centerm Community Fund fits in—a $500,000 fund to support initiatives proposed by organizations located along the South Shore in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»where construction is taking place to expand the Centerm container terminal at the Port of Vancouver.

The Centerm Expansion Project will help meet anticipated near-term demand for containers shipped through the port. Containers moving through the Port of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»include essential goods that B.C. residents rely on, such as pharmaceuticals, food products, and household items, as well as fitness equipment like home gyms and bicycles, which are especially in high demand during the pandemic.

Exports of containers moving through the port help support local and Canadian businesses shipping goods to and from global markets, helping ensure that we can keep Canada open for trade around the world well into the future.

Through this expansion project, by using the existing space more efficiently and increasing the terminal footprint by only 15%, the terminal will be able to handle 60% more containers, filled with the goods we all need and use.

Another improvement to the local community through the completion of this expansion project will include reducing port-related traffic on local roads in the Downtown Eastside and East Vancouver.

The Centerm Community Fund is part of a larger $2 million donation to community initiatives in East Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»from the port authority and the Centerm container terminal’s operator, DP World. The fund is one way these organizations are showing appreciation to the community for their patience during construction.

Since 2019, the Centerm Community Fund has shared funding with a total of 42 organizations that do work to enrich the lives of the people who live and work in the area and support conservation efforts in their community.
