Life may finally be feeling “back to normal” for you, but our kids have their work cut out for them in order to catch up on the recent years of academic disruption.

A summer program with  can help your child catch up in the areas they may have fallen behind, or, with skills that need additional practice.

Here are seven reasons why a summer program at Sylvan will make all the difference in the fall.

1. Help your child make up for learning loss

The “COVID slide” describes the increase in skill gaps and stalled development for many students due to school closures and remote learning. Schools have made significant strides in doing what they can, but we have yet to understand the long-term impacts on children from this disruption.

Bottom line: Most students were affected in some way. And, if your child was struggling with school before COVID, odds are these education gaps have only grown, especially if you have an early elementary-aged child, as youngest learners suffered most.

Even if your child was performing well in school before COVID but struggled over the last year, the longer this backwards trend remains unaddressed, the longer it will take to rectify.

2. Avoid summer brain drain—head into the fall with momentum

Academic skills are like all other skills—if you don’t use them, you lose them. In a normal school year, most kids can lose around two months of learning over the summer. Combined with cumulative deficits and summer learning loss in 2022, back-to-school time may become really difficult.

Teaming up with Sylvan this summer can allow your child to establish learning habits and strengthen skills and confidence.

3. Fill in skill gaps while moving at your child’s pace

During the school year, teachers may need to move quickly, whether your child fully understands a topic or not. With Sylvan Learning over the summer, your child can move at their own pace.

This means your child can spend the time needed to fill in any gaps, and build a strong foundation for the next grade level, or better yet—get ahead.

4. Head into big transition years with confidence

Throughout your child’s academic journey, certain grade transitions represent substantial jumps in responsibility and independence.

These big transitions include:

  • Grade 3 to grade 4
  • Elementary school to high school
  • High school to post-secondary

Young students were hit the hardest with remote learning challenges. So, getting students in kindergarten and grade 1 or 2 ready for more complex concepts and new challenges is critical.

Transitioning from high school to post-secondary can be a shock for older kids, particularly surrounding advanced-level reading and writing assignments.

5. Get a jump on higher-level math skills

If you know your child is going to be studying higher-level math in the fall, a summer tutor can help by getting a head start.

A tutor will introduce your child to these concepts and provide them with ways to think innovatively. When the new school year arrives, your child will be comfortably on the math train, not left behind at the station.

6. Learn how to tackle ever-growing workloads

Over the summer, a Sylvan tutor can help your child develop and master skills to become more efficient and productive, including time management, organization, research methods, presentation support, note-taking, and more.

Imagine heading into the fall knowing your child will be more confident, knowledgeable, and more in control, even with all the challenges of a tougher school year.

7. Avoid paying extra fees for remedial courses in post-secondary

Teens transitioning from high school to college or university can often feel blindsided. That’s because approximately 30% to 40% of incoming first-year students aren’t performing up to standards in basic English and math.

Typically, these students have to take remedial courses, leading to extra tuition fees. Additionally, the student does not receive any credit towards their program for these courses. The remedial courses simply help them catch up.

Investing in a summer tutor can help ensure your child meets these post-secondary requirements, saving you money later on.
