You know Habitat Island? That piece of land that looks like an island covered in native BC plant life which juts out from Southeast False Creek, normally accessible by a pathway of rocks even during high tide? If you've been on one of our walking tours with landscape architect from who designed it (and most of the other public space in The Village) you'll know that originally the idea was that Habitat Island was supposed to become an actual island every time the tide came up. From what I understand there were many heated arguments at the city, with opponents of that idea saying that it was a safety risk and that they didn't want people to ever get stuck on the island, so in the end they built it just high enough so that the highest tides would still never go over those rocks that you can access the "island" on. Technically it's Habitat Peninsula.
Apparently though, nobody accounted for the bi-annual King Tides to get as high as they've been lately, so a couple of days ago we saw Habitat Island truly live up to its name, temporarily dropping its peninsula status! If you've never seen it before (seriously? Get down here for a visit!), note that those square rocks you see underwater are the ones that are almost always exposed, as well as a large swath of smaller rocks around them.

Our neighbours in Kitsilano saw the King Tides' effects even more dramatically, as can be seen in these two CRAZY videos below. The first one is of Kits Pool submerged! Both are a must watch.
