Community Centers: Kensington

Until recently, I didn't even know where half of the community centers were in Vancouver... Mostly living near the west side, the east side of Van was a bit foggy for me... but I'm getting better.

This week I went and checked out the located at 5175 Dumfries Street, near the intersections of East 33rd and Knight. Immediately, it was obvious that Kensington Community is a bustle of activity, and one of the busiest community centers I have seen yet.

At first appearance, Kensington Community Center reminded me of the SFU campus, with large trees towering over the low concrete architecture. Inside, the center is warm and inviting. Brightly lit with a common area that is comfortable, the hallways stretch throughout the building and then the additions, making it a great little place to explore.

The workout facilities were good, and very popular. This was the first community center that had a line up for the treadmills... which seems weird, but everyone's got their own thing going... The treads are separated from the rest of the workout facilities, and overlook the pool, which is small but looks fun.

The weight room is well stocked and relatively smell free. It is also pretty welcoming and void of thick necks and crazy talkers.

Also, there is a pretty clean sauna and hot tub, both of which are great for an after workout come down.

For the kids, there is a preschool, rec programs, a big playground, pottery studio, lots of fields, and summer camps for July and August. It is a community center that can be fun for the whole family.

All in all, Kensington is a great place to check out, and if the rumors actually come true, this place might also be the destination for a skate park in the future. So keep your fingers crossed!
