Here's something random that I came across on the sidewalk right outside of the Chinatown parkade yesterday.

Standing nearby was a city worker who told me that what's going on here is "coal tar removal" from below the streets. He didn't elaborate on that much but Wikipedia tells me that coal tar is "a brown or black liquid of high viscosity, which smells of naphthalene and aromatic hydrocarbons". The guy told me that he was spending four hours manning this odd contraption and when it was full " comes and takes it away and treats it". So that's all I know.
Here's some other random city worker posts I've made:
- Painting traffic lines .
- Thanks for fixing the cracks, dudes .
- Snowblowing bugs out of trees .
