It's not very often that we hear about tall buildings coming down in this young and growing city of ours. Aside from heritage homes being bulldozed to make way for new mansions, the story that we're used to hearing is the one of densification and things going up to make way for all the new people that are moving here.
Yesterday I found myself going down a Youtube rabbit hole looking for archival clips and somehow I unintentionally got deep into building implosions. I knew of Woodward's coming down in 2006 but was surprised to find archival footage of 3 other tall buildings being collapsed since 1994. It's a weird thing to witness these structures with huge histories contained within their walls coming down in a few seconds, but worth spending some time with.
Pacific Palisades Apartment Building - November 1994.
Georgia Medical Building - May 1989.
Woodward's - September 2006.
YWCA Building on Burrard - October 1997.
(this is a super long one - the actual building falling is around the 39 minute mark)
