Our friends at the just shared this photo with us of some folks on the Wannock River holding up some of the largest spring salmon you might ever see together in one image.
The folks shown here are with the Rivers and Smiths Ecosystem Planning Society and they're collecting broodstock for the hatchery. Wannock River is a destination for many anglers because of the legendary Chinook (LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THEM!), and their hatchery is key to enhancement efforts for supporting local recreational and first nations fisheries.
After seeing dramatic declines in the wild salmon populations in Rivers Inlet on BC's Central Coast, since 2011 the have been working hard with their partners to achieve healthy and sustainable wild salmon populations in Rivers Inlet. Recently stepped up and donated $20,000 to help them further their efforts, and other partners include local lodge owners such as Good Hope Cannery and Duncanby Lodge, governments, Rick Hansen, independent scientists and of course the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
"Interfor's donation reflects an understanding and respect for the connection between their business goals and those of local communities and conservation foundations," said Rick Hansen, CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation. "Corporate support is critical to supporting this work so that the legendary chinook will be enjoyed by generations to come."
