Avalanche Canada is again warning anyone venturing into the North Shore mountains of higher than normal avalanche danger ratings.

In their Thursday forecast, the agency predicted high likelihoods of avalanches from below the treeline into the alpine for all day Friday and Saturday. The higher than usual risk is due to the winter storm that blew in Thursday night, dumping up to 60 centimetres of snow.

“This storm will deliver snow with cold temperatures down to an elevation of 500 metres. Combined with strong southwest winds during the day the avalanche danger will increase with continuing snowfall throughout the day,” the warning on Avalanche.ca read. “There is uncertainty how well the new snow will bond with the old snow surface. Assess the bond of the recent snow before committing to avalanche terrain and travel conservatively.”
