This coming weekend - Friday June 14th to Sunday June 16th - fishing without a license is not only legal, it’s encouraged! Family Fishing Weekend has happened every Father's Day in British Columbia for the past 14 years thanks to a kind give from the provincial and federal governments. Since I became a father 4 and a half years ago I've participated in every single one (though I've also paid for an annual license every year, as I like to fish).

So let's approach the math in my headline, shall we? In 2012 there were 3,778,367 adult residents in this province. Multiplying that by the cost of a fishing license for 3 days (found ), the total give from the provincial Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and the federal Fisheries and Oceans Canada would come to a whopping total of $75,567,340. That's if every single adult in BC threw a line in the water. That's a pretty significant give to encourage participation in one of my personal favourite natural resources, as well as encouraging people to hang out with their kids.
